Many of my patients come in with low back pain attributing it to muscle related dysfunction. But, what you don’t know is that your low back pain is four times more likely to be caused by what’s called a sacroiliac (SI) misalignment as opposed to a muscle related dysfunction. Also, chiropractic can treat an SI misalignment through a simple pelvic adjustment.

Your sacroiliac (SI) joint is the connection between your sacrum (the triangular bone in the lower back that is situated between the two hipbones of the pelvis) and your pelvis itself. There is a joint on both sides of the sacrum and this allows for your hips to be able to swivel. Discomfort may be felt when leaning forward and most commonly when turning over in bed. This condition can arise when the joint starts to degrade over time, if you experience a trauma of some sort, or by any other means that may have led to a misaligned SI joint. However, many times people that experience low back pain from an SI dysfunction do not attribute the pain to its true cause, but instead, resort to blaming muscle spasms or any other muscle related disorder.

Interestingly enough, according to a study done at the Royal University Hospital Low Back Pain Clinic in Saskatoon, 1293 patients were treated over a 12 year period and their specific diagnoses’ were recorded; surprisingly, the most common cause of the patients low back pain was SI joint syndrome, with an overwhelming 23%. In this study, all muscle related low back pain diagnoses’ were grouped together and they totaled a mere 6% of all the cases. That means that when you are experiencing low back pain, you are four times more likely to have a diagnosis of SI dysfunction than all other low back muscle related disorders put together.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing low back pain that is exasperated when turning over in bed, a sacroiliac misalignment is a very plausible diagnosis and seeing an experienced and trustworthy chiropractor should be your main priority. Dr. Brockman at South Lake Wellness and Injury Center in Clermont, FL would be more than happy to schedule you a free consultation so that he can see what would be the best treatment option to rid you of your persistent low back pain.
